Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Russia and Tajikistan have signed an intergovernmental agreement outlining the conditions for rehabilitation efforts at the Adrasman tailings storage facility and the waste dumps of Workshop No. 3 at the Taboshar industrial site.

The exchange of signed agreement folders took place between Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Russia’s Rosatom State Corporation, and Sherali Kabir, Minister of Industry and New Technologies of Tajikistan, during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on 17 March in Moscow.

The agreement establishes the procedures and conditions for rehabilitation activities at the Adrasman tailings storage facility and the Taboshar industrial site in Sughd Region, Tajikistan. The planned work aims to improve the environmental situation, enable efficient land use, support the socioeconomic development of local communities, and further expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Previously, Rosatom had already conducted rehabilitation work at the Taboshar industrial site under the 2012 Intergovernmental Target Program (ITP) "Rehabilitation of Territories Affected by Uranium Mining". As a result of this program, low-grade ore dumps and four tailings storage facilities at the industrial site were brought into a radiation-safe condition. These efforts, completed ahead of schedule, were finalized in autumn 2023.
