Rumors of CIS break up "grossly exaggerated
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Rumors that the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will soon disband are "grossly exaggerated," a top official of the CIS Executive Committee said in Moscow on Wednesday. "Rumors that the CIS will soon come to an end have proved grossly exaggerated," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Sergei Lebedev, chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, as saying. "We have many things that unite us. It is only by joint efforts that military security of our countries can be ensured," he said at the meeting of military commanders of the CIS members, who gathered to discuss development of multilateral military cooperation up to 2015. "The concept of military cooperation of the Commonwealth states up to 2015 will be based on the questions discussed now," Lebedev said. He believed that "military cooperation of the Commonwealth states, despite arising problems, is developing at a high pace." Chiefs of the general staffs of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Ukraine participated in the meeting. Lebedev and Andrei Novikov, head of the Anti-terrorism Center of the CIS, were also invited to the meeting. The CIS, an alliance of 11 former Soviet Republics, groups Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Turkmenistan. Georgia withdrew from the bloc due to the South Ossetia conflict last year.
