Roundtable discusses leather industry in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan and Uzbekcharmpoyabzali (Uzbek Leather Footwear) Association held a roundtable “Development of leather industry of Uzbekistan” on 21 December 2011.

The main goals of the roundtable is to inform companies of the industries about necessity on increasing scientific-technical potential, technical re-equipment of enterprises, increasing production of import-replacing goods and saving energy, raising export potential, etc.

Leather industry is developing in Uzbekistan along with other sectors. Uzbekcharmpoyabzali Association was created by the presidential decree from 23 February 2000 to coordinate development of the sector.

Main goal of the association is coordination of activities of the industries on production and processing of raw leather, production of competitive leather goods, footwear and other products, conducting single technical and investment policy, attracting foreign direct investment and introducing advanced technologies, modernizing and re-equipping enterprises of the industry.

Currently, some 15,000 skilled people work in leather and footwear industry of Uzbekistan. Main raw material of the industry is skins of large and small cattle. There is enough number of cattle in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan produces 11 million units of raw leather, of which 7 million units are leathers of small cattle and 4 million units – large cattle.

Leather-processing enterprises annually process and produce large number of leather products and export goods for US$20 million. The enterprises annually manufacture 10 million pairs of footwear, leather clothes and goods for 12 billion soums.

Industry has great investment potential due to rich resource base and skilled labour forces, developed utilities network, legal and banking services, low price energy resources, modern technologies and demand in internal and external markets.
