Roundtable discusses implementation of UN CEDAW Convention
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 9 December 2009, UNDP’s project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan” in collaboration with Uzbekistan Women’s Committee held a roundtable dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in the Poytaxt Business Center, Tashkent.

The roundtable was aimed to promote CEDAW among state agencies and non-governmental organizations as well as the general public. It was also aimed at boosting activity of the governmental and non-governmental organizations in implementing and monitoring CEDAW.

CEDAW has been a fundamental document for 30 years describing issues such as gender equality, women’s rights, freedoms and interests.

Uzbekistan ratified the Convention on 18 August 1995 and undertook obligation to ensure gender equality in political, economic, social and cultural lives of the society. The country has declared it condemns discrimination of women in order to ensure participation of women in all spheres of the society’s life equally with men and ensure promotion of rights and opportunities for women.

Uzbekistan submitted four periodic reports on execution of CEDAW in the country. The Convention and it’s implementation were main topics of the roundtable agenda.

Representatives of the state agencies, public organizations and civil society, working together to implement the National Action Plan on Implementation of the recommendations of the UN Committee on elimination of discrimination against women, participated at the event. The speeches consisted of the reports on all sections of CEDAW.
