Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Under the project “Strengthening the National Capacities for Technology Transfer” a round-table was organized to discuss the results of the International Conference on Knowledge-based development and discussion of further activities that could contribute into the next UNDP project in the area of innovation support.

Organized by the UNECE and UNDP Belarus, the Conference was held in Minsk on 10-12 June 2009 and covered such topics as creating supportive environment for innovative development, financing innovations, commercialization and protection of intellectual property, as well as public private partnerships. The Uzbek side had earlier received invitation to participate in this event from UNECE, while UNDP Belarus rendered administrative support in organizing the visit.

It is worth mentioning that UNDP Belarus had been providing technical support to the project through sharing their experience in institutional capacity building for the Belarusian Centre for Technology Transfer (RCTT). In the course of the round-table the head of the Agency for Transfer of Technology shared the details of the visit and meeting with the management of RCTT. In particular, the Uzbek side was interested in the electronic database of innovation projects that was launched by RCTT. The sides agreed to continue cooperation through connecting to the database and networking with scientific and business entities in both countries.

Delegates from the Ministry of Economy shared the knowledge they gained on the significance of business angels and venture funds in commercialization of innovations. Of particular interest to the participants of the round table was also the experience and success of Belarus in setting up the science park in the area of software production. The participants also raised the topic of rejuvenating the Science and Technology Business Incubator in Tashkent and replicating it to other business incubators throughout the regions of Uzbekistan. Altogether, the participants singled out up to six directions that could serve as activities for the next UNDP project in the area of innovation support. It was agreed that participants would provide their specific proposals that would later be compiled into a concept note and submitted to the management of UNDP Uzbekistan for consideration.
