Rosatom and YLB strengthen cooperation in lithium industrial development

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Bolivia, a contract has been signed for the construction of a lithium carbonate production plant, reinforcing international cooperative ties and confirming Rosatom’s leadership in electric mobility.

On 11 September, in La Paz, a contract was signed between Uranium One Group (part of the state corporation Rosatom) and the Bolivian state company YLB (Bolivian Lithium Deposits).

The ceremony was attended by Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora, as well as representatives from government and public organizations.

This contract marks a significant step in implementing the Russian-Bolivian program to create environmentally friendly lithium production. The new plant will be built at the world’s largest lithium salt flat, Salar de Uyuni, in the Potosí department at an altitude of 3650 meters. Production is expected to start in the second half of 2025, with a potential output of up to 14,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year.

The plant will utilize Russian direct lithium extraction technology, which minimizes environmental impact. This technology does not require aggressive chemicals and involves maximum water recycling, promoting ecosystem preservation.

The plant is expected to be a catalyst for the socio-economic development of the Potosí region, enhancing infrastructure, creating new jobs, and improving the living standards of local residents. This project exemplifies the development of equitable and mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and Bolivia.
