Romania and Bulgaria officially join the Schengen zone

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — As of 1 January 2025, Romania and Bulgaria have officially become full members of the Schengen zone, resulting in the removal of border checks on land crossings with other Schengen member states.

This significant milestone underscores the two nations’ commitment to European Union integration, according to Current Time.

The decision became possible after Austria lifted its veto in late 2024. Austria had previously blocked full accession due to concerns over illegal migration, as noted by the BBC.

The accession process began in March 2024, when border checks at airports and seaports for passengers traveling from other Schengen member states were eliminated. The final removal of land border checks in January 2025 marked a critical step in expanding the free movement zone, highlights Euronews.

By joining the Schengen zone, Romania and Bulgaria have contributed to enlarging Europe’s free movement space. Experts suggest this development will strengthen economic and tourism ties within the region, boosting the countries’ appeal to investors and travelers, reports Reuters.

Citizens of both countries welcomed the news with enthusiasm, viewing it as a recognition of their efforts to strengthen democracy, uphold the rule of law, and integrate with the European Union. This event affirms Romania and Bulgaria’s readiness to adhere to European standards, as noted by the Financial Times.
