Pumped storage power plants may be built in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Russia can jointly build two pumped storage power plants with a capacity of 1 gigawatt. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this during his visit to Tashkent.

Putin noted that the issue of building two large pumped storage power plants on lakes Aydarkul and Karateren is on the agenda.

According to him, the total productive capacity of these energy facilities will be 1 gigawatt.

“This will be a significant contribution to the energy sector of Uzbekistan,” Putin emphasized.

The President also added that RusHydro is providing assistance to Uzbekistan in creating flexible generation capacities that will help stabilize the country’s energy balance and ensure uninterrupted operation of the entire energy system of Uzbekistan.

A pumped storage power plant is designed to store and subsequently produce electricity using hydraulic processes.

The principle of operation of a pumped storage power plant is based on the use of two reservoirs located at different heights.
