President of Uzbekistan sent condolences to Morocco

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev sent condolences to the King of Morocco Mohammed VI in connection with the numerous casualties and injuries, as well as great destruction as a result of the strong earthquake that occurred in this country. This was announced by presidential press secretary Sherzod Asadov.

The head of our state conveyed words of sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the victims.

An earthquake in Morocco with a magnitude of 6.9 killed 820 people and injured another 672, the country’s Interior Ministry reports. The epicenter of the earthquake was 77 km southwest of Marrakech, where 839 thousand people live. This was reported by the Kingdom’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Al-Arabiya reports.

The most deaths were recorded in three provinces southwest of Marrakech - Al-Hawz (349), Taroudant (271) and Chichaoua (91). In the province of Marrakech, 13 people died, in five other regions - from three to several dozen.

The epicenter of the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, 77 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh, with a magnitude of 6.9, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported. The city’s population is almost 840 thousand people.

Then the Center recorded at least four tremors with magnitudes 4.8, 3.4, 3.2 and 3.3. They occurred between 1.30 and 3.21 Moscow time near the epicenter of a larger earthquake. Seismologists on the social network X (formerly Twitter) warned of possible aftershocks in the coming hours or days.
