President of Uzbekistan lays wreath at "Oda Stoykosti" monument
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Eight decades have passed since the end of World War II. Despite the passage of time, the memory of those tragic years, the suffering, and the trials endured by millions remains vivid.
On the contrary, the lessons of war serve as an important reminder of the value of peace, stability, and mutual understanding. This profound meaning is embodied in the Day of Memory and Honor, which is celebrated annually on 9 May.
On this day, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Victory Park and participated in a memorial ceremony.
The entire park was filled with the sounds of poignant music. Every monument, inscription, and symbol within the park conveys the pain and tragedy of the war, reflecting the heroic contribution of the Uzbek people to the Great Victory. On such commemorative days, many people come to pay their respects.
In keeping with tradition, the head of state laid a wreath at the "Oda Stoykosti" (Ode to Resilience) monument — a symbol of the people’s resilience, courage, and the heavy losses endured during the war years.
According to archival data, nearly two million residents of Uzbekistan — out of a population of 6.8 million at the time — were called to the front. Of these, approximately 540,000 perished, 158,000 were listed as missing in action, over 50,000 were victims of torture in Nazi concentration camps, and more than 60,000 returned home disabled.
The feat of Uzbek soldiers and officers is confirmed by the numbers: 214,000 individuals were awarded combat orders and medals.
Uzbekistan also made a significant contribution to rear support. The republic became a reliable stronghold for the front: military equipment, weapons, clothing, and food were sent from here. Despite the hardships, the people warmly welcomed about 1.5 million evacuees, including 250,000 orphaned children.
— "These are pages of true heroism and courage. We have the right to be proud of our people, who demonstrated unshakable will and devotion to the Motherland. We must never forget this, and we must convey these truths to the youth. Especially now, in these difficult and uncertain times, it is important that every citizen is ready to defend their homeland," said President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
In accordance with the Presidential Decree of February 19 this year, the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II and the Day of Memory and Honor are widely celebrated across the country. Special attention is paid to those who gave their lives for a peaceful future, as well as to the living veterans and elderly citizens.
The ceremony at Victory Park was attended by representatives of the Armed Forces, government and public organizations, neighborhood activists, and respected elders. All participants laid flowers at the monument.
The President also visited the "Light of Memory" composition installed in the park. This monument honors the heroism of the people of Uzbekistan — both those who fought on the frontlines and those who worked selflessly on the home front. The composition is designed as two birds soaring into the sky, symbolizing the continuity of generations.
The monument harmoniously combines historical content with modern forms of art. By scanning the QR code placed on the monument, visitors can access information about the memorial, the war heroes, and download the electronic version of the book Light of Memory.
