President of Uzbekistan discusses child rights protection with UN representative
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 7 April, within the framework of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Tashkent, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with Najat Maalla M’jid, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Violence against Children.
At the beginning of the meeting, Najat Maalla conveyed sincere greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The parties discussed the further development of comprehensive partnerships with various UN institutions, including the office of the Special Representative focused on child protection.
The Special Representative praised the reforms carried out in Uzbekistan under the leadership of the President, particularly efforts to protect children from violence, repatriate women and children from conflict zones, and combat child labor.
Special attention was given to enhancing cooperation in the development of international legal instruments on child rights, improving national legislation, and strengthening the work of institutions dedicated to child protection.
The discussion also covered preparations for a regional conference on the prevention of violence against children to be held in Tashkent, as well as a roundtable at the UN Headquarters where Uzbekistan’s experience in this area will be presented.
