President briefed on developments in nuclear energy sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 10 February, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting to review the current state of the nuclear energy sector and outline key priorities for the future.

Amid growing energy demands from both the population and the economy, Uzbekistan has been actively expanding its energy sources. In addition to traditional power capacities, the country has introduced around 4 gigawatts of alternative energy in recent years, increasing the share of "green" generation to 16%.

Over the next five years, Uzbekistan plans to add 25 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, which is expected to generate 64 billion kilowatt-hours. In the long term, the goal is to increase the share of green energy to over 50% of total electricity production by 2030.

The rapid advancement of digital technologies, electric vehicles, electronics, artificial intelligence, and mining is driving a significant increase in electricity demand.

As the world transitions to new energy sources, fossil fuels are gradually being replaced by renewables. Already, 42% of global electricity production comes from alternative energy sources.

One of the most stable and efficient solutions for long-term energy system development is nuclear power. Currently, there are 417 operational nuclear reactors worldwide, with a total capacity of 375 gigawatts, and new plants continue to be built. Many countries are integrating nuclear energy into their national development strategies.

Uzbekistan, which possesses its own uranium reserves, is also working on establishing a sustainable energy base, including the development of small modular reactors. In this context, a major international conference on the use of nuclear energy was held in Samarkand on December 5, 2024.

During the meeting, officials presented reports on ongoing efforts in the sector.

President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of training specialists for the future nuclear power plant and the broader industry. He also stressed the need to comply with international safety standards set by the IAEA. It was noted that the introduction of nuclear technologies will enhance Uzbekistan’s economic competitiveness and lay a solid foundation for its long-term development.
