Powerful earthquake in Myanmar: Magnitude 7.7, destruction across multiple countries

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 28 March 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck central Myanmar, causing destruction and panic not only in the country itself but also in neighboring states.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremors were recorded at 06:20:54 GMT near the city of Sagaing, approximately 12 kilometers northwest of it. The earthquake’s hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The disaster was felt across many regions of Myanmar, as well as in neighboring Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Laos, and China. Authorities have reported significant destruction in Mandalay, the country's second-largest city. Historical landmarks, including sections of the royal palace, have been damaged, and residential buildings and infrastructure have suffered severe impacts.

The earthquake’s effects extended to Thailand as well. In Bangkok, an under-construction skyscraper collapsed, trapping dozens of workers under the rubble. According to Reuters, one person has been confirmed dead.

Serious damage has also been reported on the road network between Mandalay and Yangon. A 90-year-old bridge sustained significant structural damage, potentially complicating transportation in the region.

The Myanmar authorities have declared a state of emergency and launched search and rescue operations. Similar measures have been implemented in Bangkok, where the Thai Prime Minister has imposed a state of emergency in the capital, temporarily suspended stock exchange operations, and urged citizens to exercise caution.

Official figures on casualties and injuries are still being verified. Rescue teams continue to clear the debris, and authorities fear that the death toll may rise significantly in the coming hours.
