Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Flood warning systems will be installed in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. This was announced by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay.

Speaking at the Glacier Forum, held as part of the international high-level conference “Water for Sustainable Development” in Dushanbe, she noted that the system will be created with the participation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Azoulay noted that one of UNESCO’s key tasks in the field of science is to assess the vulnerability of the population to the processes of melting glaciers.

According to her, this summer early warning systems for floods will be installed in the Talgar River basin in Kazakhstan, in the Psem River basin in Uzbekistan and in the Alai Valley in Kyrgyzstan. It is also planned to introduce this system in Tajikistan.

In her speech, Azoulay recalled a 2022 UNESCO report that predicted that glaciers would disappear from a third of World Heritage sites by 2050. “But we can still play our part and protect the remaining two-thirds because these glaciers are the common heritage of humanity.

That is why we must act together, she said.

Azoulay also expressed gratitude to the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon for attracting the attention of the world community to the problem of glacier conservation at a high level.
