Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - Today, 92.1 million tons of onions are grown around the world on an area of 4.5 million hectares of land. The average yield is 19.3 tons per hectare.
The leading countries in global onion cultivation are China, India, the USA and Iran.
In Uzbekistan, a number of our farmers are currently obtaining good onion yields through the creation of new high-yielding onion varieties suitable for cultivation at different times, the use of improved technologies for growing from seeds, seedlings and sprouts, in particular water-saving technologies - drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.
Bakhtiyor Mirzaev, head of the Jilgalisoy Shabadasi farm in the village of Chorvador, Jizzakh region, Zominsky district, dug a vertical well this year and introduced drip irrigation technology in his fields. The yield was 150 tons per hectare, which is an absolute record.
“We do not intend to stop at the result achieved this year; next year, together with scientists from the Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, we plan to obtain 160 tons of harvest per hectare. God willing, in the next 3 years we have set a goal to increase the yield to 200 tons per hectare,” said farmer Bakhtiyor Mirzaev
