Tourist bus accident in Venice: more than 20 people killed
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A tourist bus in Venice fell from an overpass and caught fire. The accident killed at least 21 people and injured 40 others, Rai news agency reported
The accident occurred on the evening of 3 October in Mestre, the mainland quarter of Venice. The bus broke through a fence and fell from a height of ten meters, after which it instantly caught fire - according to Rai, the bus was powered by methane.
It is clarified that the bus was transporting tourists from Venice to a camping holiday in Marghera. The accident occurred near the railway tracks, so train services were temporarily suspended.
The president of Venice region, Luca Zaia, called the accident “a tragedy of enormous proportions.” “I express the condolences of the entire Venice region to all the families who, in these hours, are experiencing a very difficult loss or are suffering due to the injuries of their loved ones. I have asked our entire medical team to use every possible resource to provide maximum care,” Zaia said.
The mayor of the city, Luigi Brugnaro, called the incident a huge tragedy and declared city mourning. The President and Prime Minister of Italy Sergio Mattarella and Giorgia Meloni expressed their condolences.
