Quality health contributes to early childhood development

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – In a quest to improve early childhood development (ECD) across the country, UNICEF today, handed over 8,100 guidelines titled “Organization of medical care in the preschool educational organizations” to the Ministry of Preschool Education.
The publication guides on key activities of medical workers in pre-schools. It provides direction on proper hygiene, nutrition, and preventive measures, including immunization. It also highlights on monitoring growth and development of children, while special attention is paid to forming healthy lifestyle skills.
"Good health is vital for preschoolers, impacting on numerous outcomes in life and it is essential that we invest in systematic guidance to provide health care across pre-schools," said Munir Mammadzade, UNICEF Representative in Uzbekistan. “The period at pre-school sets a base for all future social, mental, physical, and cognitive development. Critically the early years provide the building blocks for educational achievement, economic productivity, responsible citizenship and lifelong health of the next generation.”
UNICEF developed the guidelines in cooperation with the Ministry of Preschool Education, Ministry of Health, and Center for the Development of Professional Qualifications of Medical workers with the aim to equip medical personnel of preschool educational facilities with knowledge and skills to ensure safe and healthy conditions for children.
“To effectively implement educational programmes it is important that the entire staff – teachers and health- workers at a preschool, ensure all aspects of care, that is health, physical development and mental well-being of the child on daily basis,” said Agrippina Shin, Minister of Preschool Education.
As a next step in ensuring the capacity building of healthcare providers working in the preschool education system, UNICEF with the Ministry of Preschool Education is developing an online education program, which can reach and train more than 8000 nurses in a short period of time.
