Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A meeting was held at the Uztekstilprom Association with the Minister of Batik, Hand Textiles and Clothing of Sri Lanka Dayasiri Jayasekara, the information service of the association reported. The delegation was received by the chairman of the Association "Uztekstilprom" Ilkhom Khaydarov.
The production and export of textiles and clothing is one of the largest industries in Sri Lanka, playing a key role in the development of the country’s economy.
The clothing industry in Sri Lanka employs about 15% of the country’s labor force, and the annual export of textiles is about US$6 billion. That is, about half of all exports are accounted for by the textile industry.
It should be noted that Sri Lanka is one of the leading clothing producing countries in the world in relation to its population. And the main sales market is the United States, where products are supplied for more than US$2.5 billion.
Why is the Uzbek textile industry interesting for partners from Sri Lanka, because the country itself is a leading exporter of textiles?
According to Minister D. Jayasekhar, the textile industry of Sri Lanka is developing rapidly, especially in the manufacture of fabrics and hand-made ready-made clothing. Over the past decades, the country has strengthened its position as a reliable supplier of textiles. As part of the long-running "Clothing Without Guilt" campaign, the Sri Lanka Clothing Industry Trade Association has gained attention for its commitment to ethical causes, including the fight against child labour.
The minister noted that recent events in the world, in particular those related to the pandemic, a sharp increase in prices for transportation and raw materials, have also affected the textile industry of Sri Lanka, which forced them to look for alternative sources.
Uzbek yarn and fabrics are highly valued for their high quality and are considered premium. And for the manufacture of batik and other clothes by hand, the quality of raw materials is of great importance. And Uzbekistan can become a long-term partner for manufacturers from Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that the delivery of products takes about 40 days, Sri Lanka is ready to consider the proposals of the Uzbek side.
Ilkhom Khaydarov, in turn, noted that the establishment of cooperation between the countries will expand the trade turnover between the countries and promote the active development of cooperation between manufacturers. The Association is interested in further expanding cooperation with Sri Lanka in the textile sector and is ready to assist the Ministry in establishing contacts between manufacturers of the two countries.
Following the meeting, the parties agreed to continue the dialogue on cooperation in the textile industry. During the visit, the delegation will visit the enterprises of Bukhara, Namangan and Tashkent regions to get acquainted with the products manufactured and conclude agreements on the supply of products.
