Great Britain expresses interest in further expanding comprehensive and constructive relations with Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 9 September, as part of a visit to the UK by a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Sodiq Safoev, a round table on Uzbekistan and the development of Uzbek-British relations was held in the House of Lords of the British Parliament.
The event, which was co-organized with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Cooperation with Uzbekistan (APPG) and Conservative Friends of Eurasia, was attended by about 50 representatives from both houses of parliament, government, academia and the public in the UK.
During the forum, the British were informed in detail about the progress of reforms in Uzbekistan, the development strategy of the republic for the coming years, as well as foreign policy priorities. An interest was noted in further expanding comprehensive and constructive relations with Great Britain.
In turn, the British parliamentarians praised the large-scale reforms in Uzbekistan, expressed unwavering support for the course of democratic transformations in the republic. Separately, the key role of Uzbekistan in strengthening peace and stability, ensuring sustainable development and prosperity in Central Asia was noted. It was pointed out that there is a significant untapped potential for expanding and deepening bilateral cooperation in various fields, incl. on the inter-parliamentary line.
Lord Peter Lilly, President of the Conservative Friends of Eurasia, noted with satisfaction that Uzbekistan is confidently going through a process of deep and positive changes, political and economic liberalization. Congratulating the Uzbek people on the 30th anniversary of Independence, Lord Lilly noted that the history of Uzbekistan's statehood is deeply rooted in history. Despite the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states in 1992, cultural ties between the two nations today go back more than 600 years and date back to the correspondence between Amir Temur and King Henry IV of England.
APPG Chairman Andrew Bridgen stressed the importance of further strengthening comprehensive ties with Uzbekistan, which is seen as a reliable friend and promising trading partner of the UK.
Member of the House of Lords Baroness Alison Sutti highly appreciated the cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries, in particular in the field of improving the parliamentary system in Uzbekistan. At the same time, she spoke in favor of the need to continue active inter-parliamentary interaction on the basis of mutual understanding and mutual respect, the formation of real partnerships.
Lord Muhammad Sheikh noted the presence of great potential for the development of Uzbek-British interaction in various areas, including the areas of attracting investment, green energy, education, healthcare, finance and tourism. The parliamentarian also pointed to the great cultural heritage of Uzbekistan, stressing the importance of its active promotion in the international arena.
Honorary President of the OSCE PA Lord Peter Bownes welcomed the active participation of the Uzbek side in the activities of this organization. Noting the positive achievements of Uzbekistan in the electoral sphere, he informed about the upcoming visit to the country of a representative mission of the OSCE PA to observe the upcoming presidential elections.
Deputy from the Conservative Party B. Blackman stressed that Uzbekistan became the first country in the region to sign a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the UK, which created a solid legal basis for strengthening comprehensive cooperation. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of developing cooperation in the field of education and strengthening human potential.
Former Minister of Sports Lord K. Moynikhan praised the efforts of Uzbekistan to develop sports. This is evidenced by the impressive results of Uzbek athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. As vice-chairman of the parliamentary committee on sports, he expressed interest in establishing practical cooperation with the relevant departments of Uzbekistan.
Former Minister of International Trade Lord Francis Mode, noting that reforms in Uzbekistan create new opportunities for the development of trade and economic cooperation, stressed that British business "should not miss its chance to gain a foothold in the Uzbek market."
In general, the visit to Great Britain demonstrated mutual interest in strengthening bilateral political dialogue, economic cooperation, development of cultural and humanitarian ties, as well as inter-parliamentary cooperation. The meetings held also made it possible to exchange views and assessments on key issues of a regional and international nature.
