Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The largest wind farm will be built in Karakalpakstan. The plant’s capacity will be 1,500 MW. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.
On 3 May 2021, an agreement on the implementation of a wind farm project was signed between ACWA Power, the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic.
The project includes the design, construction and operation of a 1,500 MW wind power project in Karakalpakstan, which, once commissioned, will become the largest wind farm in the Central Asia region and one of the largest in the world.
“This project is another landmark achievement for your country and strengthens ACWA Power’s commitment to work with fast-growing markets such as Uzbekistan to achieve its ambitious renewable energy and sustainable development goals,” said the chairman of the Saudi company. Mohammad Abunayan.
“As an energy producer, we in Uzbekistan are learning a lot from our Middle Eastern and especially Saudi partners as we move towards a low carbon economy. The ACWA Power project will greatly contribute to this process. Our plan is to produce 25% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030,” said Deputy Energy Minister of Uzbekistan Sherzod Khojaev.
The project is expected to meet the electricity demand of approximately 4 million households and offset approximately 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, which will directly contribute to the Government’s goals of significantly increasing RES electricity generation to meet growing demand.
The project is aimed at supporting the efforts of the government of Uzbekistan to diversify the country’s energy balance in accordance with the ongoing strategic reforms in the energy sector.
ACWA Power is also an investor in two wind power projects in Bukhara and Navoi, concluded earlier this year, with a combined power generation capacity of 1000 MW. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and investment agreements have been signed on them. In addition, the Saudi company is implementing a project to build a highly efficient 1,500 MW gas-fired power plant in Syrdarya.
