Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - This opinion was expressed by Wade Cusack, an expert from the American Institute for Global Engagement, during a meeting with experts from the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 30 April 2021.
During the conversation, a thorough exchange of views took place on the ongoing reforms in the field of religion and the development of interfaith dialogue in Uzbekistan.
Wade Cusack also shared his impressions of his stay in our country:
“I came to Uzbekistan to carry out research work within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies and the American Institute for Global Engagement. This study brings together cross-national and country analyzes to clarify the causes and consequences of advancing religious freedom and ongoing reforms in this area.
As a result of my research, I saw that religious life in Uzbekistan has greatly changed in connection with the ongoing reforms. Both the representatives of the Muslim majority and other confessions present here speak of a “fresh wind” inspiring religious life. Much of what was previously forbidden has now become common practice. The development of Islamic enlightenment is gaining momentum and has long gone beyond mere rhetoric. Interfaith ties are being built and strengthened, and state institutions initiate meetings in Tashkent and the regions, where representatives of all confessions are invited to discuss emerging issues and make recommendations to the government on lawmaking and law enforcement practice.
For the successful continuation of reforms in the religious sphere, it is necessary to support Uzbekistan in the development of religious literacy and building interfaith relations and to spread this experience around the world. "
At the end of the meeting, Wade Cusack expressed "great gratitude to ISMI, the Committee on Religious Affairs under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan for their assistance in conducting research and organizing meetings in the regions of the country."
Let us remind you from the editor that the Institute for Global Engagement was founded in 2000 with headquarters in Arlington (USA). It is an authoritative think tank for the study of religious freedom. In 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between ISMI and IGV. In 2019, a visit of the IGV delegation to Uzbekistan was organized in order to exchange experience on ensuring religious freedom and interfaith harmony. The delegation included renowned pastors, imams, rabbis, experts from the International Center for the Study of Law and Religion, religious scholars from the Universities of Cardiff and Kentucky, women leaders of the Center for Women, Faith and Leadership. Within the framework of their stay, an international scientific and practical seminar on the topic "Religion and the rule of law" was organized; Round table on the topic “Dialogue of confessions is an important factor in ensuring peace and harmony in society”.
