Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov paid an official visit to Turkmenistan on 23-24 October 2014 on invitation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The main events of the visit took place on 24 October. After official ceremony, Presidents of two states held face-to-face meeting, the press service of the President of Uzbekistan said.
Presidents of two states discussed issues of cooperation. It was noted that two states have common interests and intentions to develop relations. Presidents said the countries have all potential and opportunities to develop the relations.
The sides discussed international issues as well and underlined that the countries have common views and positions on them.
Islam Karimov and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov considered issues of water use in the region. They noted that international norms should be followed in use of water and construction of hydro power stations. They also discussed settlement of conflict in Afghanistan.
Presidents agreed to continue to hold meetings at high level to develop bilateral strategic cooperation, mutual coordination of positions and views on actual problems of regional and international character.
At the meeting with participation of the delegations, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan discussed issues of further developing trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian cooperation.
Trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan was US$353.9 million in 2013 and US$246 million in January-August 2014. But the countries have great potential in this sphere.
It was underlined that the Uzbek-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on trade-economic, scientic-technical and cultural cooperation should develop efficient measures and mechanisms to expand mutual trade turnover and investments.
Transport communication is one of priority directions of economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Automobile and railway roads of two states are well integrated and provide transit of goods of two states and third countries.
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are actively cooperating in transport communication sector, including in construction of Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman transport corridor, which has geostrategic importance.
Implementation of the project will help link countries of Central Asia with economically active ports in Middle East. This will help to develop cooperation in customs sphere, cargo transportation and transit of automobile, railway and sea transports.
It was said that the joint projects will give new impulse to development of investment cooperation.
Energy cooperation is another priority direction of further developing economic relations.
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have great reserves of hydrocarbon resources, but they have no direct exit to global markets. They underlined that two states should coordinate their work in this direction. Successful implementation of Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China gas pipeline helps to diversify geography of export of natural gas.
The sides discussed issues of expanding number of joint enterprises, representatives of national firms and companies. The sides reached agreement to continue to hold national exhibitions to demonstrate economic potential of two national and establish direct contacts among business circles.
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are developing cooperation in humanitarian-cultural sphere. Representatives of two nations are participating in concerts, festivals, exhibitions and forums in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
The sides will exchange information on cultural and sport events, so the representatives of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan can participate in them. The exhibitions and fairs of handicrafts will be also organized.
During the negotiations, the sides underlined that Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have great opportunity in tourism sector and agreed to cooperate via organization of combined travels within the project Great Silk Road.
After the talks, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed the joint statement. Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan signed agreements on supply of modern agriculture equipment, cooperation of the ministries of foreign affairs and chambers of commerce and industries, cooperation in ecology sphere.
After all events, Turkmen President handed over international award of Turkmenistan named after Mahtumkuli to Uzbek leader for his contribution and development of friendly and cultural relations between Uzbek and Turkmen people.
President Islam Karimov awarded Mustaqillik order to Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for his contribution to development of friendly and good neighborhood relations between Uzbek and Turkmen people, development of fruitful relations between two countries.
In the second half of the day, Islam Karimov visited a memorial complex Halk hakydasy (People’s memory). He laid flowers to the monument. He also visited museum about the victims of the World War, Gektepa battle and Ashgabat earthquake.
