Presidents of Uzbekistan and Latvia hold negotiations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov and President of Latvia Andris Berzins held negotiations in Tashkent on Wednesday, 28 May 2014.
As reported earlier, President of Latvia Andris Berzins arrived in Uzbekistan on 27 May with an official visit at the invitation of President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.
An official welcoming ceremony of the Latvian President was held at Koksaroy presidential residence. The guard of honor was lined up to welcome the honorary guest. The national anthems of Latvia and Uzbekistan were glorified, after which the heads of the states reviewed the guard of honor.
During a tet-a-tete meeting, Islam Karimov and Andris Berzins exchanged opinion on wide-range of issues, related to developing cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia, regional and international issues of mutual interest.
In particular, the Presidents of two states discussed issues of cooperation in transport-logistic sectors, development of trade-economic relations, implementation of joint projects, situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan. The sides also considered development of cooperation in education, science and culture spheres.
After the tet-a-tete meeting, the Presidents of Uzbekistan and Latvia held negotiations with the participation of the delegations of two states.
After the talks, Uzbekistan and Latvia signed a joint declaration of the heads of state and a package of documents directed at boosting the Uzbek-Latvian mutually advantageous cooperation across diverse areas.
Latvia is Uzbekistan’s third largest trade partner among the countries of the European Union. The bilateral trade turnover exceeded US$248.8 million in 2013.
Uzbekistan exports cotton-fibre, oil products, fruits and vegetables, pharmaceutical products, mineral fertilizers, non-ferrous metals and other goods.
Latvia, in its turn, delivers textile equipment, electrotechnical products, products of machinery, foodstuff, pharmaceuticals, optical products, as well as transport services to Uzbekistan.
Currently, there are 21 enterprises with Latvian capital in Uzbekistan, while 19 Latvian companies accredited their offices at the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade of Uzbekistan.
