Tashkent hosts conference on human rights

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An international conference “Developing national system of human rights protection in condition of the country modernization: experience of Uzbekistan and international practice” on 24-25 October 2013.
The conference was organized by Uzbekistan Human Rights Center in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, Prosecutor-General’s Office, Ministry of Interior Ministry, Ombudsperson’s Office, OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan, EU Project, and others.
Representatives of the UN, London University, Beijing University, NGOs and state bodies from Europe and Asia, law enforcement bodies, educational establishments of Uzbekistan participated the conference.
The conference participants discussed development of national system of human rights protection. It was noted that Uzbekistan joined over 70 international documents on human rights and undertook obligation to encourage and protect human rights and freedoms. Uzbekistan presented over 30 reports on civil, political and economic, social and cultural rights to the UN Committees and adopted over 10 national plans.
The conference underlined that the civil society institutes are playing more important role in protection of human rights in the country. Currently, there are 6,500 NGOs in Uzbekistan.
At the conference, the participants underlined necessity to further improve national human rights system through modern legal regulation of organizational-legal mechanisms on implementation of personal, political, economic, social and cultural rights, strengthen activities of legislative, executive and judicial powers in protection of human rights, develop cooperation with the UN agencies, etc.
The attendees adopted recommendations directed at improving legislative and institutional framework for protection of human rights and freedoms in Uzbekistan, deepening cooperation in this area.
