Uzbek leader to pay visit Latvia

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov paid a visit to Latvia on 16-17 October 2013 on invitation of the President of Latvia Andris Berzins.
During the meetings and negotiations with the Latvian leadership, the sides will discuss issues of gradual development of multifaceted Uzbek-Latvian relations, important regional and international issues, UzA reported.
In the result of the visit it is planned to adopt a joint statement of the heads of the states and sign several documents directed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation in political, trade-economic, transport-communication spheres and in the field of protection of environment.
Latvia recognized independence of Uzbekistan on 22 October 1992. On 3 November 1992, Uzbekistan and Latvia established diplomatic relations to lay foundation for development of long-term bilateral cooperation.
Jahon news agency reported that over 30 documents, regulating cooperation in various areas, create legal framework base.
Trade economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia is developing. Latvia is one of three top trade partners of Uzbekistan in the European Union. The states set the most favorable trade regime. Trade turnover between two states hit US$240 million in 2012.
Uzbekistan mainly exports mainly cotton-fibre, motor and lubricant oils, pharmaceutical products and other goods to Latvia. The country also imports equipment, vehicles, plastics and logistic services from Latvia.
Currently there are 22 enterprises in Uzbekistan, which were created with participation of investors from Latvia, of which 6 enterprises with 100% Latvian investments. They are engaged in production of furniture, textile, oil processing, confectionary products, polygraph industry and trade.
It is expected that upcoming visit of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov to Latvia will be key event in history of inter-state relations and lift cooperation between two nations to new level.
