US Embassy hosts meeting on English language teaching

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 13 June 2013, the US Embassy in Tashkent hosted a meeting on English language teaching, which was attended by Jennifer Uhler, Regional English Language Officer at the US State Department.
She is a professional on Public Affairs. Focus of her work, as she described, is enhancing the quality of English Language Teaching with the ultimate goal of increasing mutual understanding between the people of Uzbekistan and United States.
“Majority of my work happens together with English Language Teachers, which is one of the best audiences a person could hope for to work with,” Jennifer Uhler said at the meeting.
“I frequently work with ministries, universities of education, institutions and organizations that promote teaching of English. The rest of my work is divided into two categories. The first one is facilitating programs for teachers; the second one is providing resources to help teachers better do their work,” she said.
In terms of programs, Regional English Language Office have programs that bring highly qualified Americans, who are teachers of English to Central Asia, in particular, to Uzbekistan, for short-term or long-term projects. She mentioned that over the 2012-2013 academic year, they have had both short- and long-term specialists here.
One of the products of the office is English Teaching Forum. It is a peer reviewed academic journal written by teachers for teachers. It is the most widely distributed journal of its kind in the world. It is available to teachers free of charge from the US Embassy, also for download online. Regional English Language Office also provides opportunities for teachers distance sources, and webinars online. All of them can be found at www.americanenglish.state.gov.
Maybe the most exciting thing from the office is that recently a video game has been created for teaching English. This game was made in combination with professional video game designers and English language teachers. A special thing about those video games is that there is a students’ and a teachers’ edition. It has teaching materials including lesson plans and raised to use as teaching material; it is free of charge and available for download at www.americanenglish.state.gov.
Jennifer Uhler joined the US State Department in June 2011 as a Regional English Language Officer. Previously, Jennifer was an instructor in the English as a Foreign Language Program at Georgetown University and an adjunct professor of TESOL at American University. Abroad, she has worked in many capacities, including as an English Language Fellow in Estonia, an English Language Specialist in Austria, a Fulbright Scholar in Romania, a bilingual education teacher in Mexico, and a Peace Corps Volunteer in Slovakia. In addition, she has worked with the University of Montana and the Korean National University of Education in their capstone teacher training program in the U.S. Jennifer holds Bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and English from Augustana College and a master’s degree in TESOL and Language Program Administration from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Her professional interests include using technology to enhance teaching, content-based instruction, and curriculum design.
