Beijing hosts roundtable on partnership of Uzbekistan and China

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A roundtable of experts titled “Strategic partnership of Uzbekistan and China: experience, reality and perspectives” was held in Beijing, China, on 15 May.
Center for Political Studies (Uzbekistan), China Overseas Friendship Association, China Central Asia Friendship Association, China Fund for International Research organized the event. The event was aimed at assessing modern state of Uzbek-Chinese relations and determining key trends and perspectives of cooperation in context of possible threats and challenges.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Cheng Guoping underlined strategic character of relations between Uzbekistan and China. He said that the relations are based on mutual trust, openness, respect and support each other at international level. He said that Center for Political Studies and Fund Forum also played key role in development of relations between two states.
Director of Center for Political Studes Gulnara Karimova the relations between two states represent one of key components in structure of security of Central Asia. She said that the cooperation in energy security can be evidence for that. Uzbekistan transits natural gas from Turkmenistan to China and after completion of construction of third and fourth line of gas pipeline from Central Asia to China, it will become one of the largest gas suppliers to China.
Gulnara Karimova drew attention of the participants to potential threats and challenges, which Uzbekistan and China can face in near future. She also outlined positive perspectives of strengthening of relations between two nations. She said that the sides could jointly create stable inter-continental economic, transport and energy space with focus on cooperation in production, innovation and investment spheres. Uzbek free economic zones – Navoi, Angren and Jizzakh – could serve as catalyst to this.
Ms Karimova also drew attention of participants to cooperation within the SCO. She proposed to create think-tank center of the SCO on the bases of joint Uzbek-Chinese efforts, which would unite independent analytical centers of the member-states. She noted that these centers could present fresh ideas for development of the organization.
Executive chairperson of China Fund for International Research Liu Guchan said that the Uzbek-Chinese relations passed several stages of developments, starting with establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992 and reaching current strategic partnership relations. He underlined that the trade turnover between two state rose 55 times. He said that the sides should start to search for new perspectives of cooperation. Uzbekistan and China should continue mutual support in political sphere, he said.
At the roundtable, the Chinese side underlined that Uzbekistan and China have great potential to further development of cooperation, including in transport-communication.
Within the roundtable the Center for Political Studies and China Fund for International Cooperation signed a memorandum of cooperation.
