Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan’s Foreign Ministry visited Portugal, Trend reported quoting the source in the Ministry.

The official delegation took part in the first round of the Uzbek-Portuguese inter-ministry consultations. Uzbekistan is the first and the only country in Central Asia, which formed bilateral political cooperation with Portugal in the format of regular political consultations of the foreign ministries of the two counties.

Portugal recognized the independence of Uzbekistan in January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the countries were established in August 1992. The political dialogue between the governments was launched during the visit of Uzbek President Islam Karimov to Portugal in 1996. The Uzbek President met with Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio and Premier Antonio Gutierrez during the visit.

In October 2002, Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Martins da Cruz visited Uzbekistan as OSCE Chairman-in-Office.
