Paralympics 2024: Uzbekistan achieves its best result in history

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 8 September 2024, the Summer Paralympic Games concluded in Paris, France.

For the first time in its history, Uzbekistan was represented by 65 athletes, who secured 113 spots across 9 sports for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

The Uzbek team delivered its best performance in the history of the Paralympics. Uzbek Paralympians won 10 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze medals, marking the country’s highest achievement in terms of medal quality.

However, in terms of the total number of medals, Uzbekistan did not surpass its performance from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, where they won 31 medals. At the Paris 2024 Games, Uzbekistan earned a total of 26 medals.

Uzbekistan ranked 13th in the overall medal standings, first among Central Asian countries, second among CIS countries after Ukraine, and third in Asia behind China and Japan.

Several historic achievements were recorded at these Games.

Fifteen-year-old Uzbek athlete Shahinahon Yigitalieva won a silver medal at the Paris Paralympics.

Track and field athlete and Uzbekistan’s flag bearer Khusniddin Norbekov became a three-time Paralympic champion, winning gold in shot put with a result of 16.82 meters, setting a new Paralympic record.

Sherzod Namozov won a gold medal in men’s para-judo in the J2 category, becoming a two-time Paralympic champion.

Athlete Bobur Omonov became a two-time Paralympic champion in men’s shot put in the F41 category. His throw of 14.32 meters not only earned him the gold medal but also broke his own Paralympic record set in Tokyo in 2021.

Asila Mirzayeva won gold in women’s long jump in the T11 category of Paralympic athletics. She set two Paralympic records with jumps of 5.22 and 5.24 meters.

Nurkhon Kurbonova secured a gold medal in women’s javelin throw in the F54 category of para-athletics, setting a new world record with a throw of 21.12 meters.
