Uzbekistan 03/08/2009 Paper says poll praises human rights reforms in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Citizens are sure that the path of development chosen by Uzbekistan guarantees building a law-governed democratic state, gives priority to and ensures protection of human rights. The majority of survey respondents believe that this is the essence of legal reforms being carried out in the country, which is based on the principle of equality of all people before the law, Uzbek newspaper Tashkentskaya Pravda reported on 1 August.

The overwhelming majority of respondents (90%) noted that significant and stable results in all the spheres of the society’s life, including in the activities of bodies for protecting human rights, had been scored in the implementation of reforms. People’s positive assessment of these achievements is also confirmed by the public opinion that each Uzbek citizen is given an opportunity to protect his rights in the condition of the supremacy of law, which is the main criteria for the efficiency of reforms in the legal system and its correspondence to democratic principles.

The overwhelming majority of respondents (87.4%) feel full legal protection from possible violation or discrimination of their civil rights and freedom.

The respondents highly rated the practical implementation of the main constitutional rights and freedoms, including the right to work (91.1% of respondents), to receive education (96.3%), to have social protection (91.7%) and pension (91.7%).
