Paolo Roversi’s darkly romantic prints on display in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Legendary French photographer Paolo Roversi is showing his works as part of the Tashkent International Photo Biennale. Roversi’s ongoing show is an opportunity for the Tashkent public and international guests to get a taste of what made the Frenchman one of the world’s most sought-after professionals. His works will be on display until October 9.

Roversi’s photo exhibition in Tashkent offers black-and-white portraits and close-ups of women. He is adept at conveying to the viewer the emotions and feelings through his works. In his series of works with models Audrey and Guinevere van Seenus, the artist used various techniques.

“I am honored to be in Tashkent and attend Art Week,” Roversi said at the opening ceremony for Style.Uz. “I have brought two things that are very dear to me: my wife and my photos. And I hope to bring my children to Tashkent next year because I would like them to get to know this beautiful country with amazing people. I want to say a big thank you to the organizers for inviting me.”

Roversi’s works are unique in that while the objects in his photos do not smile they still remain beautiful. His darkly romantic, beautiful and ethereal portraits have made him one of the world’s most sought-after professionals, with glossy magazines ready to pay him up to 40,000 euros for a fashion photo shoot.

“My photography is more subtraction than addition. I always try to take off things [on set],” Roversi once said, defining his technique. “We all have masks of expression, and I prefer them to be off. I find that when there is emptiness, interior beauty emerges.”

One of the early adopters of the Polaroid, the Italian-born, Paris-based photographer saw the potential in the camera in the ’70s, years before many of his contemporaries did. Using the Polaroid’s filter and frame to accentuate fashion’s most immediate and delicate moments, Roversi’s style of shooting spawned a legion of admirers. After working under Harper’s Bazaar lensman Laurence Sackman during his salad days, Roversi developed his own POV and began to shoot solo for Elle and Dépêche Mode. His work created such a domino effect in fashion photography that his style became the new industry standard in the ’80s and ’90s.

His works have appeared in a number of leading magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, ID, Interview, Uomo Vogue and British. Big-name celebrities featured in his photos include Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bündchen, Monica Belucci, Audrey Tautou, Tilda Swinton, Linda Evangelista, Natalya Vodianova, Kate Moss, Sasha Pivovarova and Milla Jovovich among others. Roversi has overseen advertising campaigns for Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Hermes, Lanvin, Kenzo, Vera Wang, Cerruti 1881, Christian Dior, Alberta Ferretti, Romeo Gigli, Givenchy, Krizia, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons.
