Pakistan imposes restrictive measures against persons associated with terrorist organizations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Pakistan introduced restrictive measures against 88 persons associated with terrorist organizations, including Jaish-e-Muhammad, ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Taliban and Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan.

According to Pakistani media, the sanctions measures include: a) freezing bank accounts; b) seizure of property; c) a ban on traveling abroad.

“The sanctions,” the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan said, “were adopted in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions. At the same time, Islamabad hopes that other countries will also follow this example.

It is noteworthy that the leaders of the Taliban are on the sanctions list, including the chief negotiator A. Baradar and the deputy head of the Movement S. Haqqani, many of whom, according to foreign media reports, have business and property in the IRP.

According to experts, the introduction of restrictive measures by Pakistan against figures associated with terrorist groups is due to the following factors:

- Firstly, in anticipation of the meeting of the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF), Islamabad seeks to improve its "counter-terrorism image". According to The Associated Press, the sanctions were adopted to avoid the country being blacklisted by the FATF (tracks terrorist financing crimes), which could severely limit Pakistan’s ability to receive financial assistance from international organizations.

According to Al Jazeera, Pakistan was placed on a gray list last year. Until now, Iran and North Korea have been included in the FATF’s "black list".

Against this background, "Pakistan Today" focuses on the fact that on 21 August 21 I. Khan was informed about the progress in the development of legislation related to the FATF;

- secondly, relying on receiving dividends from the international community, Pakistan is simultaneously putting pressure on the Taliban in order to start the intra-Afghan negotiations as soon as possible. Earlier, the intra-Afghan negotiations were postponed indefinitely due to yet another disagreement over the exchange of prisoners between the IRA government and DT.

In general, analysts agree that through the adoption of "counter-terrorism sanctions" Pakistan is mainly seeking to enlist the support of the international community in obtaining the necessary funds to improve the deplorable socio-economic situation in the country.
