Some surprise results on Wednesday means a few teams will be travelling unexpectedly during the R16 matches on May 11 and 12 instead of staying at home.
Among them are Iran’s Esteghlal, who fell to a 2-1 defeat at UAE’s Al Jazira, a team who were without a victory before MD6.
Because of the defeat, Esteghlal stayed on 11 points as Qatar’s Al Gharafa took over top position, on 13, with their 1-0 away win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli.
Gharafa are now at home to Uzbekistan’s Pakhtakor while Esteghlal must make a difficult trip to Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab.
Last year’s finalists Al Ittihad were eliminated after losing 1-0 away to Group B winners Zob Ahan, of Iran, allowing Uzbeks Bunyodkor to steal second place.
After a topsy-turvy campaign, Bunyodkor completed their group matches with an easy 4-1 home win over UAE’s Al Wahda to finish on 10 points, three behind Zob Ahan.
China’s Beijing Guoan sealed second place in Group E after their 2-0 home victory over Japanese contenders Kawasaki Frontale.
They finished on 10 points, five behind Korea Republic’s Seongnam Ilhwa, who beat Melbourne Victory 3-2.
Beijing are now away to Group G winners Suwon Bluewings, of Korea Republic, while Seongnam are at home to 2008 champions and Group G runners-up Gamba Osaka, of Japan.
Kashima Antlers, as expected, finished on top of Group F with the only 100 per cent record of the tournament after beating Korea Republic’s Jeonbuk Motors 2-1 at home.
Antlers now entertain defending champions Pohang Steelers, of Korea Republic while Jeonbuk are away to Australia’s Adelaide United.
