OSCE Centre supports dialogue between civil society and political parties in Kazakhstan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A roundtable meeting on removing barriers to effective interaction between non-governmental organizations and political parties was organized by the OSCE Centre in Astana jointly with the Public Foundation for Parliamentary Development in Kazakhstan on 26 November.

More than 50 representatives of local non-governmental organizations and political parties, think tanks, and members of Parliament discussed ways to overcome obstacles to establishing constructive relations between political parties and NGOs. The participants also discussed what needs to be done to develop truly effective inter- and intra-party dialogue, and to foster constructive communication.

"One of the pillars of the OSCE’s work is to assist the participating States in the development of civil society by facilitating the dialogue between political parties and non-governmental organizations that should pursue a common goal of serving the people and safeguarding democratic principles," said Alexandre Keltchewsky, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Astana.

Zauresh Battalova, President of the Public Foundation for Parliamentary Development in Kazakhstan, added: "Kazakhstan’s further democratic development requires enhanced co-operation between political parties and civil society organizations. Such interaction would address the needs of the population more effectively and contribute to state institutions becoming more transparent and responsive."

The meeting was part of the Centre’s work to promote democratic governance and facilitate civic dialogue in Kazakhstan, which will chair the OSCE in 2010.
