Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The number of Uzbek citizens who died as a result of poisoning by counterfeit alcohol in Istanbul (Türkiye) has risen to 14. This was reported by the Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Istanbul.
Earlier, 10 Uzbek nationals had been reported as deceased. However, according to the press service of the consulate, four more Uzbeks died from poisoning.
Currently, three Uzbek citizens are in intensive care, and their condition is reported as critical.
As of 17 January 2025, the total number of people affected by counterfeit alcohol in Istanbul has reached 88, of which 37 have died. The victims include both locals and people from other nationalities.
Turkish law enforcement agencies have seized more than 30,000 liters of illegally produced methyl and ethyl alcohol.
Nine suspects have been arrested as part of the investigation. Three of them were released after interrogation, while the others remain under investigation, according to the Consulate General's statement.
