Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Vimpelcom, leading telecommunication service operator in Russia and the CIS, said its Uzbek subsidiary, Unitel, doubled its net operating revenue in the first quarter of 2009 to 1.984 billion Russian rubles.

About 1.884 billion rubles were received from mobile communication operations and 101 million rubles from fixed communication in the reporting period.

First quarter OIBDA increased by 20.2% compared to the fourth quarter of 2008 to 1 billion rubles, while OIBDA margin made up 56.6%. OIBDA is defined as operating income before depreciation, amortization and impairment loss. OIBDA margin is OIBDA expressed as a percentage of total net operating revenues.

Number of subscribers of Unitel made up 3.65 million as of 31 March 2009 or increased by 0.5% compared to the beginning of the year. Market share of the company fell from 33.6% in January-March 2008 to 27.9% in the same period of 2009.

The MOU decreased from 265.3 minutes in the first quarter 2008 to 238.6 minutes in the reporting period. MOU (Monthly Average Minutes of Use per User) is calculated by dividing the total number of minutes of usage for incoming and outgoing calls during the relevant period (excluding guest roamers) by the average number of subscribers during the period and dividing by the number of months in that period.

ARPU increased from 141.4 rubles in the first quarter of 2008 to 177.1 rubles in January-March 2009. ARPU (Monthly Average Revenue per User) is calculated by dividing the company’s service revenue during the relevant period, including roaming revenue and interconnect revenue, but excluding revenue from connection fees, sales of handsets and accessories and other non-service revenue, by the average number of the company’s subscribers during the period and dividing by the number of months in that period.

The RUR/USD exchange rate at the end of the first quarter of 2009 was 34.01 and the average rate for the quarter ended 31 March 2009 was 33.93, the RUR/USD exchange rate at the end of the fourth quarter of 2008 was 29.38 and the average rate for the quarter ended 31 December 2008 was 27.27.
