Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 16 November 2020, the American company Moderna announced the completion of the third phase of clinical trials of its mRNA-1273 vaccine. More than 30 thousand volunteers took part in the tests, and infection with COVID-19 was detected at an intermediate stage in only 95 people.

At the same time, 90 cases fell on the control group, whose representatives were injected with placebo instead of mRNA-1273. Among those who were actually vaccinated, only 5 people became infected.

Analyzing the successful trial of another vaccine in the United States, experts point out the following points.

1. Moderna’s vaccine is proving effective against severe forms of virus infection. According to the interim results of the third phase of trials of this drug, the vaccine reduces the risk of infection with coronavirus by 94.5%, which is higher than the effectiveness of other vaccines under development. Thus, the effectiveness of another American vaccine, Pfizer, is estimated at 90%, the Russian Sputnik V vaccine - at 92%.

2. The Moderna vaccine has other significant strengths, as it is suitable for people over 65, and the side effects of the drug are short-lived and mild.

In particular, most of the participants in the trials tolerated vaccination without any noticeable side effects. Only about 10% of people vaccinated after the second dose had side effects such as fatigue, muscle pain, or redness around the injection site.

However, a number of experts warn that vaccines will not have time to reduce the number of COVID-19 infections in the coming months and the winter period will be difficult. However, by next winter, provided that vaccinations are carried out in the summer and autumn, life can return to normal and the global economy will recover. In 2021, Moderna expects to produce up to 1 billion doses of vaccine.

In general, a successful trial of another vaccine in the United States and the emergence of several vaccines at once can create a "turning point" in global efforts to combat coronavirus infection and lead world countries out of the "coronavirus crisis".
