Ministry of Energy: Gas Discharge During Well Drilling in Muynak Contained, No Threat to Population
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan has issued an official statement regarding reports circulating on social media on 27 July about an uncontrolled gas leak in Karakalpakstan.
According to the ministry, the incident occurred a day earlier, on 26 July, during exploratory drilling of Well No. 1 in the “Uchsay” mahalla of Muynak. At a depth of 4,707 meters — with drilling planned to reach 5,000 meters — a sudden release of gas began. This is the first well to be drilled in this area as part of geological exploration efforts.
Due to unexpectedly high gas pressure, emergency response teams immediately began controlled blowout containment operations. The ministry emphasized that all actions are being carried out in full compliance with established safety protocols.
Specialists from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Uzbekneftegaz, Uzbekgeofizika JSC, and militarized units specialized in eliminating oil and gas blowouts have been mobilized. To minimize environmental and technological risks, a method of controlled gas flaring was employed, which helped partially localize the release.
According to official data, no casualties have been reported. The affected site is located far from residential areas.
The released gas is composed of pure methane with no sulfur content and, based on current information, does not pose any health risk to the population.
The Ministry of Energy assured the public that the situation is under control, and additional updates will be provided as events unfold.
