Memorandum of understanding signed for investment project in Karakalpakstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 19 August 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Akmal Jumanazarov, Director of the Uzbek Agency for Technical Regulation, and representatives of Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power. The MoU pertains to an investment project with a total value of US$1.7 million.

The goal of this memorandum is to implement calibration services for measurement instruments used in renewable energy (wind and solar) power plants in the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

As part of this initiative, a complex of laboratories equipped with high-precision modern measurement instruments will be established at the branch of the Uzbek National Institute of Metrology in Karakalpakstan. The branch is currently setting up the necessary infrastructure for these laboratories according to international recommendations.

Creating laboratories with advanced high-precision measurement instruments to ensure the quality and safety of products is a priority for the Uzbek National Institute of Metrology under the Uzbek Agency for Technical Regulation.

Over the past five years, the number of national standards in Uzbekistan has tripled, and calibration coverage in industrial sectors has reached 78%. This improvement has led to a fourfold reduction in the currency spent on calibration services abroad. Additionally, due to the accelerated development of industry and the increased demand for precise measurements, continuous efforts are being made to enhance metrological laboratories.

It is worth noting that ACWA Power plans to build wind power plants in the Aral Sea region, which will generate approximately 18,500 GWh of clean energy annually. This project will be implemented in five phases, marking a significant step towards Uzbekistan’s strategy for transitioning to clean energy.
