Chagaev’s German promoters were incensed that the 40-year-old British heavyweight from Bedford had left World Boxing Association champion Chagaev hosting a one-man show.

Chagaev accused Skelton of "ducking" him but the Briton claimed he had simply opted to spend extra time at home.

"I decided it was right for me to stay those extra hours," former kickboxer Skelton said after arriving late yesterday afternoon. "I needed peace during these two days in my preparation. I wanted the head space. This is a dream fight, and now a real opportunity."

Chagaev, an Uzbek based in Germany, is unbeaten in 24 contests, with 17 knockouts.
