Sports 16/10/2008 Lu survives Bopanna scare

Top seeded Yen Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei survived a scare from qualifier Rohan Bopanna of India, while unseeded Mathieu Montcourt of France upset eighth seeded Go Soeda of Japan to move into the quarterfinals of the US$125,000 Tashkent Challenger, an ATP Challenger series event being played at the Olympic Tennis School in Tashkent.

Second seeded Dudi Sela of Israel and fifth seeded Bjorn Phau of Germany also moved into the last eight stage of the tournament.

In the second round matches played today, Lu overcame a fighting Bopanna 3-6,7-5,6-0 in a 1 hour 40 min tussle, while unseeded 192nd ranked Frenchman Mathieu Montcourt upset eighth seeded Japanese Go Soeda 6-3, 6-2 in a one sided encounter.

Second seeded Dudi Sela had to fight out a late challenge from Kazakhstan’s Yuri Schukin to record a 6-1, 7-6(7-1) win. Fifth seeded German Bjorn Phau did not have to exert himself registering an easy 6-3, 6-3 win over Thailand’s Danai Udamchoke.

In the quarterfinals tomorrow, Lu will clash with Bjorn Phau, fourth seeded Berrer will play Czech Republic’s Pavel Snobel. Sixth seeded local favorite Denis Istomin will take on third seeded German Denis Gremelmayr, while Second seeded Dudi Sela will play Frenchman Mathieu Montcourt
