The visit of Globe theater to Uzbekistan was carried out within the project Globe to Globe, which is dedicated to the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birthday.
The visit of the Globe was organized at the support of British Council in Uzbekistan, Ministry of Culture and Sport Affairs of Uzbekistan and creative-production union Uzbekteatr.
On 23 April 2014, on the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birthday, Globe launched a two-year global tour with Hamlet play. The play will be demonstrated in all 205 states of the world. The project will end on 23 April 2016.
The Globe to Globe Hamlet will reinforce the Globe’s continuing commitment to internationalising Shakespeare following the runaway success of the 2012 ‘Globe to Globe’ festival.
Dominic Dromgoole, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, said that the tour is a part of our irrepressible aspiration through the works of Shakespeare and the theater arts to develop an open and joyful dialogue between people despite language barriers and physical boundaries.
The start of play was unusual. While the spectators were taking their seats, the actors came on stage, some of them corrected stage props, while others tried on costumes. One of the actors walked down to the hall and talked with the audience.
The troupe does not use light or other technical special effects, as well as phonogram. The actors perform music themselves.
The play lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes. During this time, eight actors performed 20 roles at the scene with minimum of decorations. The play was shown in English with Russian subtitles.
The audience received the play with rapture and gave standing ovations to the actors.
