Learning about leasing through a captivating competition
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Leasing, or as it is sometimes called “financial rent”, is a popular and proven way of investing assets. In Uzbekistan leasing has been used since mid-90s, and in 2000 the legal base with certain tax breaks was passed for these types of transactions.

Nevertheless, experts think that leasing companies in the country work to 10-15% of their capacities. One of the reasons for that is shortage of lawyers who specialize in this area of law. It is obvious that theoretical knowledge and practical skills in leasing for future lawyers need to be obtained starting from their student years.

That is why it does not come as a surprise that leasing was chosen as a subject for this year’s annual economic moot court competition for law students of Uzbekistan.

The final round of the competition will take place on April 24, 2011. As a tradition, it will be hosted by the legal clinic of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. This year’s participants of the final round are representatives of law faculties from Tashkent and Namangan.

All participants have been given the competition case, containing leasing related questions for both sides, plaintiff and defendant. The teams had to analyze the legal position of each side in the case and prepare legal documents to be presented to court. In the final round, the four teams with the highest scores in the preliminary round will argue their cases in front of a judicial panel, consisting of professional judges and lawyers. The competition is aimed at improving law students’ teamwork, analytical, leadership, public speaking skills and knowledge of procedural and substantive areas of law.

The competition is supported by the UNDP project “Developing capacities of the national human rights institutions”. The project’s main objective is to strengthen capacities of the national human rights institutions and similar bodies to effectively carry out their mandates in protecting human rights.
