Uzbekistan 23/04/2009 Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan agree on 80% of total length of state border - Kyrgyz PM
Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have agreed on 80% of the total length of the state border, Prime Minister Igor Chudinov said during session of Ak Jol parliamentary faction, AKIpress reported.

The most disputable parts of the border with Uzbekistan remained only. With Tajikistan, said Prime Minister, Kyrgyzstan negotiates the border in the valleys now. All mountainous parts of the border have been agreed on. Only disputable parts of the border in valleys of Batken oblast remain still open.

“We should realize that all border issues are approved with consensus only. This is a vary hard process, but we hope we will be able to agree on all parts of the border,” Chudinov stressed.

“There are 2 approaches to this issue: one is built upon the document of 1924, the second approach is built upon the USSR directive of 1956. These documents are completely different. The first one suggests border delimitation depending upon the population, the second suggests border delimitation based on economic activities. Frankly speaking, somewhere it is more favorable to use the first document, in some cases it is better for us to follow the second document. This is really very hard,” Igor Chudinov said.

Even though this process is very slow, but it moves on every year, the Prime Minister said.
