Uzbekistan 13/07/2007 Kyrgyzstan to take "unprecedented security measures" for SCO summit
Kyrgyzstan will take "unprecedented measures" for the security of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, said an official from the Kyrgyz national security committee on Thursday.

The SCO summit, scheduled next month in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, has attracted much attention, not only among the international community but also among international terrorist organizations, said Oi-Talbek Osmonov, the head of the Bishkek Directorate of the State National Security Committee of Kyrgyzstan.

Therefore, the Kyrgyz national security committee will take all possible measures to ensure the safety of the SOC summit, said Osmonov Thursday in an interview with Kyrgyzstan’s Kabar news agency.

An Operations Command has already been set up to this end, he added.

Close surveillance and effective prevention of all possible terror acts and other illegal activities are key to the security work, said Osmonov.

Moreover, a series of measures will be adopted including cracking down on the possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives, the seeking and arresting of extremists and the prevention of terrorists entering across the Kyrgyz border.

Kyrgyz police will work with local institutions, enterprises and public service units to ensure the safety of the leaders of all participating countries and the security of the accommodation and travel routes of their delegations.

Kyrgyz police has also opened a 24-hour emergency telephone number to collect information of suspected persons and materials.

The SCO summit, scheduled for mid-August, will bring together leaders of the six member states: China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, for discussions on security, trade, military, judicial and cultural cooperation.
