Economy 16/04/2009 Kyrgyz energy project not to cut water flow into Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan - pundit
Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have no grounds to think that the construction of Kambar-Ata-1 [hydroelectric power plant] in Kyrgyzstan will hold water back, Bazarbay Mambetov, expert on economic issues, has told a news conference in Bishkek, commenting on claims about that Kyrgyzstan had not agreed the construction of Kambar-Ata-1 with the downstream countries.

The expert said that having built Kambar-Ata-1, Kyrgyzstan would not hold water resources back. Water just like before will flow into the neighbouring countries. "We have never reduced water discharge over the past 30 years," he stressed.

"We never hold water back like Turkey did in Euphrates river. If Syria and Iran used to receive up to 30bn cu.m. of water before, now Syria gets a little over 16bn cu.m. Syria and Iran cannot do anything about this as it is a sovereign right of Turkey," the expert noted.

In his view, the advantage of Kambar-Ata-1 is that water will be accumulated in winter, and in summer it will make it possible for the neighbours to receive water in the volumes needed to meet Kazakh and Uzbek demand. Kambar-Ata-1 can keep 4.65bn cu.m. of water.

He also recalled that Kambar-Ata-1 had been designed as a regulator of water of the Naryn River in Soviet times, AKIpress reported.
