Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — "Kurgon" mahalla in the historic city of Gijduvan, situated along the Great Silk Road, has been officially designated as a "Tourist Mahalla." This milestone marks a new phase in the development of the region’s tourism infrastructure and aims to attract more visitors to this area, rich in historical heritage.
The ceremony awarding the status was attended by prominent figures, including the Chairman of the Tourism Committee Umid Shadiev, Deputy Governor of Bukhara Region B. Shakhriyorov, Head of the Regional Tourism Department S. Bobokalonov, Gijduvan District Governor Sh. Ashurov, as well as representatives from the public and media.
Attendees had the opportunity to experience firsthand the infrastructure developed in the "Kurgon" mahalla to ensure a comfortable stay for tourists. Gijduvan, which dates back to the 10th century as one of Central Asia’s major cities alongside Samarkand, Bukhara, and Shakhrisabz, was once considered the northern capital of Bukhara. Today, it offers visitors a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities.
The "Kurgon" mahalla is home to numerous cultural and historical landmarks, including the "Old Stone Bathhouse" (16th century), "Bozori Qaymaq" (19th century), the mosques "Boloi Qassobon" (19th century) and "Boborakhimboy" (16th century), as well as over 10 historic homes, nearly 20 family guesthouses, and more than 10 artisan workshops. This environment immerses visitors in the authentic lifestyle of Central Asia and the rich culture of the region.
The designation of "Kurgon" as a "Tourist Mahalla" is part of Uzbekistan’s broader strategy to develop its tourism sector and underscores the nation’s commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage. This recognition is expected to draw global attention to the unique allure and historical significance of Gijduvan. Notably, Chairman Umid Shadiev also recently participated in the closing ceremony of the International Week of Pilgrimage Tourism, further highlighting the importance of tourism development in the country.
