Kirsty Coventry elected as President of the IOC

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry has been elected as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), making history as the first woman to hold this position. The election took place during the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, where Coventry secured victory in the first round of voting.

She defeated several high-profile candidates, including Prince Faisal Al Hussein, David Lappartient, Johan Eliasch, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Lord Sebastian Coe, and Morinari Watanabe.

In her acceptance speech, Coventry expressed gratitude and excitement: "It is an incredible honor and joy to be elected as President of the International Olympic Committee! I sincerely thank my colleagues for their trust and support. As a little girl starting my swimming journey in Zimbabwe, I could never have dreamed of this moment."

She emphasized the historic significance of her election: "I am especially proud to be the first woman and the first African to hold this position. I hope this step will inspire many others. Today, glass ceilings have been shattered, and I fully recognize my responsibility as a role model."

Coventry also highlighted the power of sports to unite and inspire: "Sport has an incredible ability to bring people together, open new opportunities, and ignite inspiration. I am committed to maximizing this potential. Together with the Olympic family—athletes, fans, and sponsors—we will continue to uphold our traditions, embrace innovation, and defend the core values of the Olympic Movement: friendship, excellence, and respect. I am confident in a bright future and look forward to getting started!"

Outgoing IOC President Thomas Bach congratulated Coventry on her victory, stating: "I warmly welcome the decision of the IOC members and look forward to working together during this transition period. I am confident that the Olympic Movement will continue to uphold its values and thrive for many years to come."

Kirsty Coventry will officially assume office on 23 June 2025, following the completion of Thomas Bach’s 12-year term. The IOC presidency is elected by secret ballot for an eight-year term.
