Uzbekistan 03/12/2008 Joint effort of CSTO, EU to ensure security in Central Asia
Pierre Morel
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha and EU special representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel agreed on security in Central Asia at their meeting in Moscow on Tuesday.

"In general, the meeting was constructive and useful. The main thing is that there are agreements on certain actions. However, this is traditional for CSTO-EU relations. Issues proposed for discussion at our meetings have always been detailed and interesting, while contacts have been productive," the press service of the CSTO secretariat told Interfax-AVN quoting Bordyuzha as saying after the meeting.

The meeting discussed measures taken by the CSTO and the EU to ensure stability in the Central Asian region. Both parties noted the trend of escalating situations in the region, which is caused primarily by problems in Afghanistan and the global economic crisis.

Bordyuzha and Morel agreed on coordinating CSTO and EU efforts on Afghan drug and human trafficking. The meeting took place at Morel’s initiative.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
