Sports 20/03/2009 Jason Culina: Socceroos Will Attack Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan national team
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Australia international Jason Culina says a more attack-minded Socceroos will take on Uzbekistan in their World Cup qualifier in Sydney on April 1.

Pim Verbeek’s side have come under criticism for defensive performances during their last two qualifiers: a fortunate 1-0 win away against Bahrain and a goalless draw in Japan.

However, they remain top of their group with four games left to play and could become the first nation to qualify for the 2010 World Cup if they beat Uzbekistan and other results go their way.

Speaking to The World Game, Culina insisted nevertheless that goals would be a priority for Australia.

“You will see something very different to Japan, where we were very defensive in drawing 0-0 there and also to Bahrain, where we were a bit fortunate to win 1-0,” he said.

“We want to give the fans something to celebrate. We’ll be out to score goals, like we always do at home and I think we’ll be fit, hopefully at full-strength and able to do the job.

“To be so close to qualifying with four group games left is beyond anything we ever imagined.”

Currently playing for Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, the 28-year-old will be returning to Australia next season to play for new A-League franchise Gold Coast United.

It is a move that has been previously criticised by national team manager Verbeek, whose preference for European-based players is well documented.

Culina has established himself as a key first-team player at PSV during his four years at the club, where he has regularly played UEFA Champions League football and developed into one of his national team’s most important members.

His success overseas has attracted more attention to his decision to return to Australia, though the player himself insists he will maintain his level of performance - and relationship with Verbeek - upon his return.

He continued, “I haven’t spoken to Pim lately, and if there was a problem I’m sure he would have been in touch. There are no issues at all as far as I’m concerned.

“Like I’ve said before I’m sure the level of my game won’t slide at all in returning to play in Australia - I’m going to make quite sure of that.”
